Disneyland vs Walt Disney World at Halloween - Which Park Should You Choose?

Halloween at Disney hits different. There's something about swapping the usual park magic for pumpkins, villains, and limited-time everything that makes even the most seasoned Disney visitor completely lose their mind in the best way. I STILL lose my mind every time.

But if you're trying to decide between Disneyland in California and Walt Disney World in Florida for your Halloween trip — the choice isn't as obvious as you'd think, and "just do both" is crazy. And expensive.

So let's actually break it down.

The Events Are Not the Same Thing

First, let's clear this up because a lot of people assume the two parks run identical events with different zip codes. They don't.

Disneyland runs Halloween Time, which is a seasonal overlay baked into regular park hours. The decorations go up, the seasonal food appears, and the whole park gets a spooky glow-up — all included with your regular ticket. On select nights, Disneyland also hosts Oogie Boogie Bash, a separate ticketed after-hours event with exclusive entertainment, trick-or-treating, and character meets that will make you sob if you're a villain girlie. Speaking from experience.

Walt Disney World runs Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party at Magic Kingdom — also a separate ticketed after-hours event, also on select nights. The regular parks get some seasonal touches during the day, but the main Halloween experience at WDW lives almost entirely inside the party itself.

Both parks have a big Halloween event. They just have completely different personalities — and very different price points depending on how deep you want to go.

Halloween Time at Disneyland — No Extra Ticket Required

Here's something a lot of people don't realize: Disneyland's Halloween Time is genuinely amazing even if you never buy an Oogie Boogie Bash ticket. The entire park gets transformed with themed overlays on classic rides, Halloween-specific food and drinks across both parks, decorations that make every photo look incredible, and seasonal entertainment woven throughout your regular park day.

Haunted Mansion Holiday gets a full Nightmare Before Christmas makeover that alone is worth planning a trip around. Guardians of the Galaxy gets an upgrade after 3pm - the ride gets a bit crazier with a metal soundtrack - my absolute favorite! Mater's Graveyard JamBOOree and Luigi's Honkin' Haul-O-Ween are lowkey bangers. 

The seasonal food hits so hard it should come with a warning label. I am obsessed with the fun churro flavors they come up with every year, and fingers crossed their infamous Peanut Butter Cold Brew comes back!

For Canadian families deciding whether to add an OBB ticket on top of their regular park days: if budget is a concern, a few days at Disneyland during Halloween Time without the party ticket is still an incredible Halloween experience. The party is the cherry on top, but the sundae is already pretty great.

Walt Disney World during the same period is a different story. The seasonal touches exist in the the park but they're much lighter during regular park hours. If you're going to Florida and Halloween is a big part of why the Mickey's Not So Scary ticket is essential. You're not going to get the same experience just wandering Magic Kingdom during the day.

That difference alone might make your decision for you.

Scale and Scope

Walt Disney World is enormous. Magic Kingdom alone is bigger than all of Disneyland, and Mickey's Not So Scary takes place across that entire park. The parade, the fireworks, the trick-or-treat trails — it's a full production and it earns every bit of its reputation. If you want spectacle, Florida is going to deliver.

Disneyland is more compact, which honestly I love. Everything is closer together, the atmosphere is dense and immersive, and Oogie Boogie Bash has this curated, intentional vibe that feels less "theme park event" and more "this was designed for people who actually care about Halloween." It's not trying to be massive. It's trying to be cool. It succeeds.

Characters and Entertainment

Both events have exclusive character meets you will not find at any other time of year — and this matters more than people realize until they're standing in a 45-minute line crying over a character they've never seen before.

Oogie Boogie Bash leans hard into the villains and the more obscure fan-favourite characters. My favourites so far have been Maleficent, Sid from Toy Story, and of course Oogie Boogie himself. This year they have a new Haunted Mansion inspired street party replacing the parade, which I am especially excited for. And Villains Grove is THE vibe… no actual villains, but the light shows are incredible.

Mickey's Not So Scary has a fantastic character lineup too, plus the Boo to You parade and HalloWishes fireworks, which are genuinely iconic. The parade is adorable and they hide fun little easter eggs throughout — like Ichabod Crane appearing in a window in Sleepy Hollow. I completely lost my mind when I spotted it.

Crowds and Tickets

Both events sell out. I cannot stress this enough. If you wait, you will be watching someone else's Halloween highlight reel from your couch. Oogie Boogie Bash especially has become wildly popular and early October dates disappear fast.

Pricing varies by date for both, with weekends and peak October dates costing more. As a Canadian you're also factoring in the exchange rate, flights, and accommodation on top of event tickets — which is exactly why having someone in your corner who knows this stuff matters.

So Which Park Should You Choose?

Here's my completely biased, Halloween-obsessed, been-to-both opinion:

• First timer? Either one will delight your inner child. Pick based on which park you're already planning around.

• Villain era? Disneyland. Oogie Boogie Bash was built for you.

• Classic Disney Halloween with all the production value? Mickey's Not So Scary is iconic for a reason.

• Travelling with young kids who will trick-or-treat until their legs give out? Both work beautifully. Kids go absolutely feral for either one.

• Budget-conscious and not sure about the party ticket? Disneyland gives you way more Halloween for your regular admission dollar.

I love them both, but personally I would pick Disneyland every single time. If you miss Oogie Boogie Bash, there is still so much Halloween magic packed into a regular park ticket. At Walt Disney World, most of the Halloween experience lives inside Mickey's Not So Scary. Miss that ticket and you've mostly just got some pumpkins.

If Halloween is a big part of why you're going, Disneyland gives you more ways to experience it at more price points. Walt Disney World goes all-in on one big night. Neither is wrong. It just depends on what kind of Halloween person you are.
